Getting that perfect smile is a commonly sought after goal. People want to look their best and often focus in on how their mouth looks. When speaking with someone the first thing you generally notice is their mouth, because that is where the words are coming from.

Because of this people try to do different things to enhance the appearance of their smiles. This is when they should turn to cosmetic dentistry for all their aesthetic needs.

Cosmetic dentistry is a relatively new industry that any dentist can go into. In this field they do not do the cleaning and root canals that many of us are used to, but focus instead on the appearance of your teeth and your smile.

They look to the color and overall design of your teeth and what they can to do improve it. The dentists that choose to go into this field do so because they like the artistic feel of it.

Cleaning and pulling and filling teeth are technical things that require a scientific mind. In contrast, enhancing and designing and coloring teeth are creative things that require an artistic mind.

Just as yellow teeth can cause insecurity, so can chips, cracks and gaps. These cause your smile to look incomplete and can dominate the visual appeal of the other teeth.

With cosmetic dentistry you can fix all of these imperfections to make your smile look whole. These dentists can perform a process called dental bonding.

In dental bonding dentists mix a composite material to be the exact color as your other teeth. They then roughen up the problematic area so the material can bond to the tooth.

When the dentist applies the composite material it will stick to the tooth. This way your smile can look complete and whole.

Even more stressful than a chipped tooth can be a missing tooth. When your tooth is knocked out or never grew in then you are left with a hole in your smile.

Cosmetic dentists can actually put in a prosthetic tooth for you. They start by drilling a screw into your bone under the gum line.

After a couple months the screw then embeds itself in the bone. Once it does this it is strong enough to hold a tooth.

The doctor attaches the prosthetic tooth to the end of the screw coming it your mouth. You are left with a strong prosthetic tooth which you can treat like any of your other ones.

Sometimes just fixing one tooth is not enough to improve the appearance of your smile. Sometimes you need to change everything.

When this is the case you can get a smile makeover. With a smile makeover each tooth gets a porcelain veneer attached to the front.

These veneers can be designed anyway you want them and can be whitened to whatever level you desire. Through this you can get your idea of perfect teeth placed on top of your natural ones.

The great part is you do not have to destroy your natural teeth to get these placed on. All the dentist has to do is slightly roughen it up so the veneer can bond to it.

Many people are concerned their teeth will have to be sawed down to stubs in order to place these veneers on. This is not the case as a slightly rough surface will do the job equally well.

Porcelain veneers can act as a tougher surface than enamel and thus continue to fight cavities. This way your teeth can actually look better and be healthier.

It is important to look for a cosmetic dentist who is a true artist rather than just a regular dentist attempting artsy things. Seek out referrals or when go to their office and ask to see a binder with examples of work they have performed to make sure you are interested in what they can do.
